Cinema is my life. I cannot fathom what it was like back in the days when there was no such pleasure and escape as cinema. Yet I believe cinema has always been part of our lives; it was once only manifested through our dreams and thoughts.
Before I entered the world of cinema I did photography, which is something that is my second love and passion. Photography was also an expressive form that enabled me to enter cinema. I started when I was 16 and have not stopped since. The photos you see here on this site are being published for the first time. Some of them, which are of Iranian cinematic personalities, have never been published anywhere else.
I made my first film when I was 17 years old. It was an 8 mm movie about a boy who finds one page of a story book on the street and doesn’t know how the rest of the story unfolds. The story that he reads is about a man who wants to kill himself and enters an abandoned property to cut his veins with a blade. The story on the page stops here and the boy yearns to know how it ends. As reality and fantasy begin to blur, the boy imagines myself entering the abandoned property to rescue the man. He even goes to the hospital to visit him. Meanwhile, as he is imagining these events, he attempts to find the remaining of the story book. When he actually finds the book, he reads that the man has killed himself.
My movie was a dark narrative of my pessimistic view of my surrounding environment. I was the writer, director and editor of this movie, which won the prize for Best Edited Film in the Iranian Youth Cinema Association. I had often thought about extending the length of the theme to create a long movie format, however, I decided against this once I saw other movies with a very similar theme later on.
In order to give my passion and excitement for cinema an academic framework, I enrolled in the College of Cinema & Theater of the University of Art in Tehran, Iran. During this period, I made several short films, including the ones that you can watch on this website. None of these were screened due to the limitations and political restrictions in Iran. The topics and the atmospheres in my movies are dark; there are themes of death and an empty, meaningless life with characters who have gotten accustomed to this meaninglessness.
Today, this bitterness still exists in what I write, including my scripts, as I have never given up on expressing what I have to say. When I settled in Canada, I decided to keep myself connected to the world of cinema by writing scripts and editing, and as such I entered a one year editing course using Avid. I really enjoy this kind of work. It was during that same year that I used a segment of my long-movie script called Peacock to make a short movie. Peacock is the longest script I have ever written, and the one that I want to use as my first feature film.
In this section you can see segments of my short movies. Some may appear to be poor quality due to a change in format. I hope that through these segments, I can share my passion and joy with you.
